Our kitchen trash and recycling as been a problem since we moved in. The kitchen layout doesn't leave any room for a recycling bin, let alone a full-sized trash can, meaning the breakfast counter is always covered in old beer bottles and junk mail. I've finally come up with a solution I am hoping solves our problems.
Just outside the kitchen is a little nook in the hallway where we currently put the trash can and luckily it is just large enough for the tall, single width TROFAST frame from, of course, IKEA. Meant to store children's toys and other supplies, the TROFAST series is a perfect solution with it's multiple sized plastic bins and matching lids. The tall frame is perfectly sized to hold 4 of the largest bins, 2 for recycling and 2 for trash. It hasn't been fun having to lug overly full bags of trash down 4 flights of stairs to the main cans, so having smaller bags to carry will hopefully stop me from putting it off till the can is overflowing, not to mention totally smelly. The other big benefit is being able to pre-sort our glass from the other recycling in the apartment instead of having to stand in the cold, wind-tunnel of an alley forever trying to separate them out there. To add just a bit more function to it, I am going to turn it into a message station as well by sanding down one of the sides and spraying on a bunch of chalkboard paint. My inspiration. Photos of the real deal will be up shortly.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out! I too struggle with space for garbage and recycling. right now i can fit one small garbage can, and one small plastic recycle under my sink, but the glass recycle is out in the kitchen, and it just looks out of place! i'd much rather pre-sort instead of standing in the smelly muddy alley outside! I like your idea of building up, again, can't wait to see the before and afters!
I'm with Natalie, can't wait to see the end product. Mostly because I hate looking at the situation that is currently happening with the counter. Simple solutions are just the ticket for old apartments where the space was layed out during different times than today, back then you just had trash and not as much as we seem to have these days.
